We are pleased to announce

A dramatization of the
historic meeting on March 20, 1854,
where the Republican Party was born.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in the event, if you choose.

By participating in this re-creation of history you will experience how the citizens of Ripon changed the course of United States history 156 years ago.

Performances are scheduled for the following dates

Saturday, April 24 – 3:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 3 – 3:00 p.m.

We’ve all seen movies about life on the plains in the 1800’s. Cowboys, Native Americans, pioneers, soldiers…John Wayne…all bigger than life. But have you ever wondered what it was really like for the people who lived in those times? Ripon Hay Days, June 18th – 20th, will give visitors the opportunity to find out from folks with first hand experience…well, almost.

On June 19th and 20th, living historians who have researched 19th century times and characters will be camped at Cedar Ridge Ranch, W14471 Dartford Road, in Ripon, Wisconsin. Through use of interactive encampments, demonstrations, storytelling, period dress, and artifacts they will accurately portray buck skinners, Voyageurs, Native Americans, merchants, cowboys (and gals), pioneers, and Civil War soldiers.

Visitors will be able to walk right into the encampments, talk to the re-enactors, see demonstrations, and step back into a world before electricity, telephones and cyber-space. Jim Goyette and Linda Holloway, owners of Cedar Ridge Ranch and organizers of the event, see the weekend as an opportunity for families to learn about the past together.

“This is a chance to discover history in a way that is very different from reading it in a book!” exclaims Holloway. “It’s a wonderful hands-on learning experience where parents and kids can see, hear and touch the past.”

In addition to the ongoing encampments on Saturday and Sunday, there are some special activities planned for Friday, June 18th; re-enactors will be in the city of Ripon mingling with the townsfolk. Some of the activities in Ripon on Friday include an 1800’s merchant that will be at M&I Bank in Ripon displaying various forms of currency, talking about the history of money and its use on the frontier in America. There will also be re-enactors at Ace Hardware demonstrating their characters’ roles in 19th century life. The day will end with some down-home country music by Andy’s Automatics at the concert on the Village Green in downtown Ripon from 7 to 10 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, the action is out at Cedar Ridge Ranch just outside of Ripon on Dartford Road, where living history encampments will be set up on both days starting at 10 a.m. Activities on Saturday will continue until 5 p.m. and will include horse drawn wagon rides that are in grave danger of being held up by masked bandits. People will be amazed and astounded by a Medicine Show, a demonstration of Dr. Gatling’s new-fangled gun, and the firing of a civil war cannon by Cushing’s Battery. Cowboys and cowgirls will exhibit skills that were necessary for survival in the days before supermarkets and malls. Period music will be played throughout the day by a variety of performers in character, including a local favorite, the Ceresco Prairie Band.

On Sunday the encampments, wagon rides, Medicine Show and demonstrations continue from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be food and beverages available on both days.

“People had so much fun at Hay Days last year that we couldn’t wait for this year’s event,” says Goyette. “We want this to be something that whole families can enjoy without breaking the budget, so we are keeping the admission price low. Kids can even treat their dad to a unique Father’s Day outing!”

Daily admission to the grounds is $1 per person or $5 per carload. Preferred parking will be available for elderly and disabled guests.

Ripon Hay Days is being brought to you by Cedar Ridge Ranch and the Ripon Chamber of Commerce. For more information, go to the Ripon Chamber website at www.ripon-wi.com or call them at 920-748-6764.

Prairie Exploration at Green Lake Conference Center

Interested in learning about Wisconsin prairies and some of their unique plants?  On Sunday, June 27 at 6:30 PM the Earth Partnership for Schools team of Green Lake will be hosting a tour of the beautiful prairie restoration at the Green Lake Conference Center.  Dozens of species of specialized prairie plants can be found on this 80-acre site, including a nice variety of flowering forbs and many types of native grasses.   Besides viewing the prairie plants, the group will also give attention to the variety of birds that might be encountered – so you may wish to bring your binoculars.

At the time when land in the Green Lake area was first surveyed in 1835, followed a few years later by the first white settlers, much of the vegetation consisted of native prairie and oak savanna (which was essentially prairie with scattered oak trees).  Over thousands of years, these plants helped to produce the rich soils of our farmland.  Now, the vast majority of these prairie plants are gone – or sometimes confined to a few small natural sites, and scattered locations along RR tracks and roadsides.  This is one reason why suitable lands are often re-planted with native vegetation – to provide opportunities for us to learn and study the plants that were originally here, as well as to provide homes for a wide variety of birds, mammals, butterflies, and many other critters.

To participate in this informative hike, drive into the Green Lake Conference Center and follow Lawson Drive (past the Roger Williams Inn) and then follow Hillside Drive to the Tea House, which will serve as our gathering location.  Following an introductory presentation, the group with proceed to the GLCC prairie.  In case of inclement weather, the entire prairie program will take place indoors at the Tea House.  If you have questions about this event, contact Tom and Wendy Schultz at 294-3021, or email trschultz@centurytel.net , or Ken Bates at 294-6411 and kbates@glsd.k12.wi.us.

May 18, 2010 – Matching Customers and Businesses: How to Understand and Capitalize on the Market
Community & Business Development Specialist Bill Pinkovitz, University of Wisconsin-Extension Center for Community & Economic Development

Why do some businesses survive and others don’t? How come we can’t shop in our area for all of the things we need? Often there is a miss-match between the needs and wants of customers and the availability of the goods and services offered by local businesses. But we don’t have to guess or leave this to chance! Using readily available data, we can learn a lot about the local market and help existing businesses expand to meet opportunities and recruit in others to fill the voids.

June 15, 2010 – Engaging the Community to Develop Sustainably
Community Development Specialist Randy Stoecker, University of Wisconsin-Extension Center for Community & Economic Development and Community Development Specialist Jerry Hembd, University of Wisconsin-Superior/Extension Northern Center for Community & Economic Development

Is there any way to rebuild our local economy and better prepare for the inevitable economic downturns ahead? How do we chart a new course for our community that represents the interests of all its members? We’ll discuss the essential approaches to building a consensus for the community’s future growth and development—and we’ll focus on an approach that holds greater promise for lasting, positive economic development.

This Saturday, May 29, is Princeton’s annual Spring Chicken Fling event, complete with music, great food, and fun all up and down Water Street and throughout the town!  The library will offer drop-in children’s crafts and other fun from 11 – 1.  All are welcome.

Staff and volunteers wish you and your family a safe and happy Memorial Day Holiday weekend.  The library will be closed Monday, May 31, reopening on Tuesday, 10 – 8.

The library hosts several book discussions.  Readers who enjoy mysteries and whodunits are invited to meet here the first Wednesday of each month (June 2) at 9 a.m. to share thoughts on the selected mystery and a continental breakfast.  The June read is C.J. Box’

Open Season, the first in his series featuring Joe Pickett, a new-on-the-job Wyoming game warden.  Copies of this book are available to check out at the library.  On the second Tuesday of each month, another group gathers to enjoy a potluck supper and book discussion.  The June 8 title is J.D. Salinger’s famed coming of age novel, Catcher in the Rye.  Whether this is a book you haven’t read since high school or never read, you’ll be sure to find something to add and take from the discussion.  Again, copies are available for checking out.

Tired toes?  Aching feet?  Come to the library Monday, June 7, 6 p.m. to spend an evening with Vicki Walther, a licensed massage therapist at Personal Best Spa & Fitness Center.  Vicki will share her foot massage expertise via demonstration and discussion.  Everyone will leave knowing how to give and receive a foot massage, a valuable tool for reducing stress and improving circulation.  This event is free and open to the public.

Are you hoping to be an exhibitor at this year’s Green Lake County Fair (Thursday – Sunday, August 5 - 8)?  If so, the required entry forms, which must be submitted by July 6, are available for pick-up in the library’s foyer.

Calling all long-time Princeton residents and local history buffs!  The library has three photographs taken in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s of people who are believed to have lived in Princeton and have been members of  the Bednarek, Czarapata, Klappa, or Kollat families.  The photos’ owner is doing a family history and would be grateful for clues about the people in the photos.  Please stop by and take a look and share your thoughts.

“Tip Your Hat to the Centenarians – Tuesday, April 20th  9:45 – Join the birthday celebration for those 100 years or older. We have (8) so far.  Cake and ice cream will be served.  Everyone is invited, including families.  Old hat required.

More details are – Within the community (Brown Wilcox, Patriot Place, Berlin Senior Center, Juliette Manor, None at American House) there are (8) individuals who are 100 and/or over.  The party should be simple, as most people that age can’t stay up and out for long periods of time.  All places have been contacted and state that they think the individuals would love to be here.  Joan Ballweg’s office stated that Joan would be here.  The Mayor has been invited – Bobbie or Lee Erdmann have been asked to put on a 15 minute program showing articles and clothing of the time period.  LadyBug will be bringing each Centenarian a flower, JT’s will be making the cake and presenting it.  Time is scheduled for 9:45 – 11:00.

One of the Centenarians has the title of the oldest living horseshoe player – one was either the 1919 or 1914 Miss Berlin (I can’t recall at this time), etc.,  We are still working on such details.  Invites are going out in the mail – they are in the shape of a hat – for Tip your Hat.

Here is also another event:

“Berlin Senior Center Bike Ride – Phyllis Schuit”  “Phyllis will bike 62 miles (which is her age) in one day to raise funds for the Berlin Senior Center.  Please sponsor Phyllis by making a per mile donation or a flat fee donation.  Forms are available at the Berlin Senior Center. Bike Ride is on June 9th.  GO Phyllis!”

Goosebeary’s Gives Blanket Hugs to Haiti’s Orphans

After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, one in nine children are orphans. These children need love and comfort, and a blanket can give a hug to a hurting child.

Not many people can get to Haiti to help these children directly, but almost everyone can sew a blanket. So on Monday, March 22nd, Goosebeary’s Village Quilter at 3 Harris Street in Ripon is hosting a day of sewing. The goal is to make as many blankets as possible in one day. The blankets will be made from lightweight cotton suited to Haiti’s hot and humid weather.

Goosebeary’s is working with a medical school that is sending teams of volunteers to Haiti. The volunteers will personally take the blankets with them and see that they are distributed to the children.

How can you help? You are invited to come and help at the sewing bee. Even if you don’t know how to sew, you can help with pinning, turning and pressing. You can also help by donating fabric so that others can sew blankets and by donating money to help pay for fabric, thread and shipping the blankets to the pick-up station.

“We may not be able to go to Haiti to give support,” says Jan Horn owner of Goosebeary’s, “but we can pray for the children and the volunteers that are there helping them. And let’s get together on March 22nd to see how many blanket hugs we can send to the children in Haiti who need them!”

For more information on the blanket-sewing bee at Goosebeary’s Village Quilter and how you can help, contact Jan at 748-1233.

Photo cutline: On Monday, March 22, volunteers will gather at Goosebeary’s Village Quilter in Ripon to sew colorful, comforting blankets like these that will be sent to children suffering because of the earthquake in Haiti.

Green Lake School District, A Success Story!

I Work, Live, Pray in Green Lake and send my Child to Green Lake School. I would not trust her Education to just anyone. When we chose to enroll our Child in Green Lake we looked around, carefully. We Love our Decision! The School Community provides her with the Best Education and Environment possible. We looked at what other districts offered and the value of the dollar spent. I am Not a School Educator nor could I possibly know all that is required in today’s world to educate a child. I am a frugal consumer and My Tax dollars are well spent, A BARGAIN! Live elsewhere, pay more, not me!

As I speak with the opposition what is heard is “excessive spending, not liking board choices, folks not listening to them, small class size”. They cite very specific instances that they do not like. All of the incredibly POSITIVE things: excellence in education, low taxes seem to mean nothing to them, why? I don’t know, you be the judge. There are some things I do not like. I do know when I asked in an Appropriate Manner, Time and Place I get answers. Some I liked, some I didn’t. Ok, so I did not get my way. Does not mean the school is wrong or that I should punish them by voting against the referendum. . Their Job is to educate effectively, not make Jim Williams happy with every decision.

Let’s get real, there is no way everyone is pleased all of the time! Our School Community has done an outstanding job. Just take a look at the Facts.

Test Scores, Students going on to Higher Education all speak to academic Success!  Financially: the lowest tax mill rate around. Our School Made 5 years of referendum Money last for 7years, how many of us wish we could do that?  Significant Financial savings over the last several years, without Sacrificing Quality. One incredibly important fact in educating children is Class Size. Green Lake is known for smaller classes. Some fault with the School for Doing the Right Thing for the Children. Perhaps too expensive to educate our children to high standards?  Finding Fault for Following the Evidence and doing the Right Thing! Doing the Right thing for Our Children, Saving Money, Maintaining High Standards of Excellence. Green Lake School district has one of the lowest Tax Rates in the State and the lowest around here.

HMMMM? High Standards of Excellence, Low Taxes, Demonstrated Fiscal Responsibility! Blessed are we!

I have done my Research, My child thrives at GLS. I am 100% convinced that we have the Best. The Best educational opportunity available and the best Value for the dollar!  What more could one ask?

Please Vote! Yes for the Referendum, Celest King and Gordy Farrell for School Board. They have Proven their Support for the School, are Experienced in Education and actually involved with the school..

Respectfully, James M Williams, MD, A Fortunate Resident!

February 2010

The winter into spring story times for preschoolers series begins at the library Wednesday, February 3 and continues through April 28.  Each session includes reading several picture books and related activities, beginning at 10:30 and lasting thirty to forty minutes.  Story times are wonderful opportunities for children to develop social and preliteracy skills, and for parents and other childcare providers to network.  Registration is not required and story times are free and open to all.

The library also invites you and all your pint-sized sweethearts to a Valentine crafts and story time Monday, February 8, at 6:30.  Pajama wearing is okay!  We’ll share some favorite Valentine stories, make some Valentines to share and decorate home fridges with, and more!

The library will host three demo/workshops in February.

On Monday, February 1, from 6 – 7 p.m: Vicki Walther, a certified massage therapist at Personal Best Spa and Fitness Center, will demonstrate the art of giving foot massage.  A good foot massage will bring a smile to the owner of tired and sore tootsies, is a good way to boost circulation to the toes of the elderly, infirm, or sedentary, and more.

On Friday, February 19, starting at 5:30:  Malia LeSavage, from Stardancer, will demonstrate and discuss Tibetan Singing Bowls, which have been sound medium for healing and meditation since 500 B.C.  The evening will end with a potluck supper.
On Saturday, February 27, beginning at 10 a.m:  Deb Cieliesz will guide you through the basics of needle felting.  This is a popular new needlecraft technique that uses carded wool and barbed needles to create a wool felt which can be used to embellish garments and accessories and to sculpt everything from beads to birds and other critters, and more.
These three events are open to everyone, but we suggest registering by calling or sending an e-mail (
duhr@princetonpublib.org) to help us plan.

Calling all cooks:  This is the last week to submit recipes for the cookbook being compiled and published as a fundraiser for the Community Center restoration project.  Your recipes may be submitted electronically to duhr@princetonpublib.org, or typed or legibly written and dropped off at the City Clerk’s office or the library.  Recipes are due by January 31.  For more information, please contact Cheryle Nickel at 295.6577.

The monthly library board meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 1 at 5 p.m.  The agenda is posted in the entries of the library, post office, and American Bank, or you may call the library for additional information.  Speaking of library business, the Wisconsin Library Association organizes an annual Library Legislative Day.  This year’s opportunity to meet and share information with your state representatives is Tuesday, February 16.  If you are interested in attending or would like to learn more about how to advocate for your public library, please check in with us or visit http://www.wla.lib.wi.us/legis/day/index.htm .

The library hosts two monthly book discussions.  On each month’s first Wednesday,  mystery readers gather from 9 – 10 to share continental breakfast and their thoughts about that month’s whodunit.   The read for Wednesday, February 3 is In a Dry Season by Peter Robinson, the tenth in a series featuring Alan Banks, a down on his luck English detective.  This time, Banks is sent off to Yorkshire to solve a murder that occurred half a century earlier.  On Tuesday, February 9, bibliophiles will talk about Pamela Gien’s The Syringa Tree over a potluck supper, starting at 5:30.  The Syringa Tree is set in apartheid-era South Africa and has been compared to Alan Peton’s Cry, The Beloved Country.

The Syringa Tree has been adapted to the stage.  This summer, American Players Theatre in Spring Green will present a one-woman staging of this story.  The library is organizing a “field trip” to see a performance.  If you would like more information about this, please contact the library.  We will be placing a ticket order this spring to take advantage of preseason reduced rates and to get good seats.  For more information, please take a look at APT’s website:  www.playinthewoods.org

Here is when the knitting circle next meets:  Monday, January 18, 6 p.m.  Bridge players meet at the library Thursday, January 7 & 21, 10 a.m.  Both groups welcome new participants regardless of skill level.  Materials, patterns, expertise, and conversation are shared.

Rick Kelm was recognized by the school board at its November meeting for becoming the winningest football coach in Ripon High School’s longstanding football program.  Kelm has racked up 97 wins in his twelve years as head coach of the Tigers, including two state championships.  Kelm was also cited for the positive character development that he has stressed as part of his football program.  Coach Kelm accepted the recognition on behalf of all the RHS football coaches as well as the many middle school and youth football coaches that have laid the foundation for a successful high school program.  Also recognized by the Board were the boys who qualified for and participated in the 2009 State Cross Country Meet at which the Tigers placed 15th in their division.

Have a Dickens of a Time in Ripon December 4 - 6

Step into the past and enjoy the sights and sounds of a long-gone era at the nineteenth annual "Dickens of a Christmas" in Ripon, Wisconsin Friday, December 4th through Sunday December 6th, 2009. The experience starts with the Living Windows, which are enacted only on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Walk down main street & visit scenes from times past created by Ripon merchants and residents. This year, enter the world of Norman Rockwell illustrations recreated in the storefronts of downtown Ripon. Take a horse drawn wagon ride; enjoy the carolers' songs wafting through the air, and warm up with hot cider and chocolate being handed out by local merchants.

A highlight of the festival is the Fifteenth Annual Dickens of a Quilt Show that features over 100 exquisitely crafted quilts for your enjoyment. Ripon residents also warmly invite you into their beautifully decorated homes during the Tour of Homes on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There are 6 outstanding homes on the tour, including a brick Colonial and a Queen Anne, both over 100 years old; a home and studio that used to house a Christian Science Church; and a thoroughly modern second-floor apartment flat on Watson Street. As a bonus, the Ripon Historical Society is opening the Pedrick-Lawson House, built in 1858, for the Tour this year.

Returning during Living Windows is Las Posadas, a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging in Bethlehem. It will begin at 7:15 p.m. with a procession down Watson Street as Mary and Joseph seek shelter from “innkeepers” at the shops downtown. The procession will end up at Great Hall on the Ripon College campus at about 8:00 pm for a fiesta featuring traditional foods, beverages and a Piñata for the children. All are welcome to this free celebration.

Kids will have a great time at Dickens, too! Breakfast with Santa, a Gingerbread House Display, Holiday Storytime, Las Posadas Fiesta and other activities will entertain and delight the young and young at heart.

The weekend is filled with lots of other holiday activities such as a Choral Union concert; a display of nativity sets at St. Peter’s Church; a holiday craft show; an Enchanted Forest of delightfully decorated Christmas trees; the Tuba Dan Show and Brunch; a jazz concert, and much more. Also, make sure you plan some time to visit the unique shops of Ripon to find those perfect Christmas presents. Dining or lunching in Ripon is a treat, too!

Join us for a holiday experience you won’t forget at Ripon’s Dickens of a Christmas, December 4th through December 6th!

For more information or a detailed schedule, go to www.ripon-wi.com or call the Ripon Chamber of Commerce at (920) 748-6764. The Ripon Commonwealth Press/Express, WRPN-AM, WISS-AM and Christian Family Radio are media sponsors for Dickens of a Christmas.

The Second Tuesday book discussion group meets Tuesday, November 10, beginning with a potluck supper at 5:30.  The selected title is Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, a personal narrative about the role of a “carer” set in a future and dystopic Britain.  Copies of this book are available for participants.  The December read will be Holidays on Ice, a wry (and sometimes rye) look at friends, families, and all things Christmas by David Sedaris.  The library also sponsors a monthly mystery discussion.  The next meeting for this group is Wednesday, December 2, starting with a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. and a look at Christmas is Murder:  A Rex Graves Mystery by C.S. Challinor.   These discussions are open to all.

“Give Me Five!” at Ripon’s Septemberfest

Septemberfest crowds will be putting their hands together in Ripon, WI on Saturday, September 19th. Actually, they’ll be putting one hand together with the hand of their neighbor as Ripon goes for the Guinness World Record for the most people doing a simultaneous high-five. To break the record, 1,792 high-fivers will have to connect with their partners.

“We decided to take a break this year from trying to beat the Twist record and do something a little less strenuous,” explains Angela Wiese from the Ripon Chamber. “Almost everyone can high-five so we’re expecting to have a huge crowd to help us shatter the current record!” The high-five record attempt will take place at about 3:45. High-fivers must register for the attempt anytime before 3:30 at the Ripon Chamber tent, which will be at the corner of Watson and W. Fond du Lac Streets.

Septemberfest will still be “Octoberfest with a Twist”, however. The crowd-pleasing Britins, a Beatles tribute band, will be returning to perform from 1:00 to 4:00. As soon as the high-five record is broken, The Britins will whip the crowd up with “Twist & Shout”. “Everyone enjoyed doing the Twist so much that we wanted to do it just for fun without the pressure of trying to break a record,” says Wiese.

There is much more to Septemberfest, which will run from 9:00 to 5:00, than breaking a world record. Food is at the top of the list of things to enjoy at the festival. Ripon restaurants will be on hand to offer a tantalizing Taste of Ripon from 11:00 to 2:00. You will also be able to indulge in caramel apples, chili, brats, cotton candy, and.…to top it all off, TasteRipon.com is sponsoring an eating competition at 2:45.

The popular Watson Street Custom Car Show returns for its 11th year. Historic downtown Ripon will be filled with classic and custom cars on display. Car show participants are encouraged to pre-register with the Chamber office before the day of the event.

Another returning favorite is the 8th Annual Dog Walk to benefit the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter. Owners and their furry friends will begin their fundraising walk with a parade down Watson Street at 10:30, with contests being held before and after the walk.

You won’t want to miss the laughs at The Carley House and WAUH/WISS lip-sync competition for kids. The judging criteria are lip-sync accuracy, best costume, and originality. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Participants must bring their own CD and should pre-register before September 19th at The Carley House, 124 W. Jackson.

The New Tuba Dan Polka Band will oom-pah in the morning and the Yellow Rock Cloggers will also be there to add to the fun. For those who are into the Zumba craze, or want to try it for the first time, Ripon Medical Center is hosting a Zumba Party from 1:00 to 3:00. Other highlights of the day include a Beautiful Baby Contest, children’s games and activities, a Bier Garten, the Ripon Mascot Race and Cow Plop Bingo. You can support Septemberfest by purchasing an “I Five” souvenir button for $1 at the Chamber tent.

Septemberfest is sponsored in part by TasteRipon.com, Aither State Farm Insurance, and the Ripon Chamber of Commerce. For a schedule of Septemberfest activities or registration information, contact the Ripon Chamber at (920) 748-6764 or go to the Chamber website at www.ripon-wi.com.

Staff and volunteers just shelved a new rotation of large print books.  We invite you to browse through a hundred titles that include mysteries, romances, westerns, and general fiction.  These books are joining the library’s permanent large print collection and will be available for three-week circulation through mid-November.  Large print is a terrific format for readers of all ages and needs—great for reading while exercising, for low light conditions, when your eyes are tired, or any time you’re reading under less than ideal conditions.

The library’s fall story-time for preschoolers series will begin Wednesday, October 7 at 9:30 and will continue on Wednesdays through November.  Preschooler story-time is a wonderful opportunity for children and for their parents or childcare providers.  Story-times provide opportunities to develop valuable and necessary preschool and preliteracy skills, social skills, and more.  They’re also a chance for parents and childcare providers to network with others.  Story times last approximately 30 minutes and usually include several stories, related activities, and craft.

Saturday, October 17 is Sweetest Day and the library will participate with shop owners in a city-wide retail event. Shoppers and families are encouraged to stop by between 11 and 2 for children’s crafts and to make your own sweet treat!

The library hosts a knitting circle.  Needlecrafters of all ages and skill levels are welcome.  Materials, patterns, and instruction are shared and exchanged.  The group usually meets two Monday evenings per month.  The October dates are 12 and 28, at 6 p.m.  Whether or not you are part of this knitting/crocheting group, you might be interested in a National WWII Museum sponsored program to provide hand-knit scarves to veterans centers and hospitals throughout the United States.  You’re welcome to use your own patterns or download one from www.nationalww2museum.org/education/knitting .  For more information, please stop by or call the library.

The Winnefox Library System, of which Princeton Library is a member, received a grant to host a series of job search/career transition workshops.  The series of four workshops, each session three hours long, will be offered in five different counties.  Green Lake County’s sessions will be held at the Berlin (October 14 and 21) and Green Lake (October 28 and November 4) Libraries, all from 1 – 4 p.m.  Topics, in order of presentation are:  types of work, resumes, interviewing, and planning a job search.  For more information or to register, please contact the Princeton or other participating libraries. We also have flyers about the similar programs that will be held in Fond du Lac, Marquette, Waushara, and Winnebago Counties.

Many library visitors have enjoyed the photography exhibit at the library this summer.  Nancy Hill, the artist who shared this beauty, will also share some tips and pointers on how to capture these images at a library workshop on Tuesday, August 25, beginning at 5:30.  This event is free and open to all, but registration is suggested.  If possible, please bring a working camera.  For more information or to register, please stop by or call the library.

Do you enjoy reading books and sharing conversation about them?  The library sponsors two monthly book discussion groups.  Mystery lovers are invited to meet on the first Wednesday at 9 a.m. to enjoy a continental breakfast and a whodunit.  The Wednesday, September 2 title is David Ebershoff’s  The 19th Wife, a tapestry of two tales:  a murder mystery set in a contemporary polygamous community in Utah; the other outlining the history of Brigham Young and the expulsion of one of his wives from the Mormon Church.

On the second Tuesday of each month, readers gather at 5:30 to talk books and share a potluck supper.  The Tuesday, September 8 discussion will celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth.  The library received a National Endowment for the Humanities “We the People Initiative” grant, providing the library with multiple copies of collections of essays about Lincoln from The Lincoln Anthology:  Great Writers on His Life and Legacy from 1860 to Now (2009).  Copies of all are available for participants.

The library will show a newly released to DVD movie Friday, August 28.  The movie, starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx, is the story of a friendship that develops between a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and a homeless street musician who suffers from a mental illness.  The evening will begin with a potluck supper at 5 p.m.  The movie is rated PG-13 and runs approximately two hours.

Special thanks Millie Bowey, Bill Ostrum, and Felix Schultz for helping make the library’s Crazy Days’ event a success.  We are also grateful to the Princeton Chamber of Commerce and Princeton area retailers for their support and inclusion of the library.

We have added two new videos to our YouTube page that review Ripon's historic film collection from 1937 & 1939. Video Age Productions created this two-part program as part of Ripon, Etc., a local magazine show which highlights events and activities throughout the area. The program features historic film footage from 1938 and 1939.

The footage from 1938 was shot by John Hritsko and shows the area around the Grandview Hotel which was located on the north end of the square where City Hall is currently located.

The film footage from 1939 was shot by an unknown videographer. This footage features numerous businesses in the community including Vieth Co., First National Bank, Ripon Lumber, and DuVall's Grocery as well as Ripon College and local service clubs.

We would like to thank the Ripon Historic Society and Gladys Hritsko for allowing Ripon Main Street, Inc. to convert the film to digital format. In addition, Video Age Productions and Andy Gallun graciously donated their time and talent in transferring the film to a digital format.

We are always looking for photographs and film (old or relatively recent) to add to our archive. Out of the five reels of film from 1939, 2 thru 5 have been converted to digital format and are preserved in the Ripon Historic Society archive. Unfortunately, reel #1 is missing. We hope this reel is sitting in someone’s attic, basement or top shelf of a closet. Please contact us if you can help solve the mystery of the missing reel. Donations are always welcome or we can scan images/copy film and then return the originals to you.

We hope you enjoy the program.

Are you a writer, looking for kindred spirits?  The library has been asked to create a list of creative writers who belong to or are interested in starting a writer’s group.  Please give us a call or stop by for more information or to sign up.

The library sponsors several book discussion groups—both are open to all.  On the first Wednesday of each month, mystery lovers meet at 9 a.m., over continental breakfast.  The August 5 title is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Swedish author Stieg Larsson.  This book, the first in a trilogy, takes a hard look at industrial corruption and crimes of violence against women with a plot focused on solving the disappearance of a teenage girl more than forty years before the action which is set in contemporary Sweden.  Another group meets the second Tuesday of each month, beginning with a potluck supper at 5:30.  The Tuesday, August 11 title is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Alexie Sherman.  This largely autobiographical award-winning teen fiction is about Spokane Indian Arnold Spirit who lives on a reservation but goes to a predominately white school off the reservation. Copies of both titles are available for check-out for anyone who would like to participate.

Green Lake Yacht Club hosts the 58th Annual Luncheon and Style Show on August 10th

The Green Lake Yacht Club will host its annual Luncheon and Style Show on Monday, August 10th, at the Heidel House Resort on beautiful Green Lake.  The event has been a summertime favorite for over 50 years.  Festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. with a social hour and silent auction, followed by a delicious warm-weather luncheon at 12:30 p.m.  This year’s menu features a Boston Bibb lettuce salad with roasted summer squash, grilled chicken and shrimp, and pecans, served with warm bacon and brown sugar vinaigrette dressing, rolls, beverage and a light summer fruit dessert.

During the luncheon, fashions from Hamilton’s Ladies Apparel of Berlin and Ripon, Only Her of Ripon, Twister of Princeton and the Gilded Lily, Ltd., Oshkosh, will be modeled by Yacht Club members. The models will walk throughout the dining area so everyone will have a good view of the clothes and accessories.

Door prize and raffle winners will also be announced during the luncheon.  Many area businesses and individuals have generously provided an interesting variety of prize items and gift certificates.

Large prizes will be featured in the silent auction, such as, a cruise for 50 people aboard the Heidel House yacht Escapade, and more. Silent auction winners will be announced during the event.

The Green Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1894, promotes the sport of sailing and hosts regattas on Big Green Lake.  The style show is its major fundraising event.  Proceeds benefit the Green Lake Sailing School, which provides sailing instruction for children and adults.

Tickets for the annual Luncheon and Style Show are $18 for adults and $10 for children.  They are available at the Green Lake Chamber of Commerce office on Mill Street, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.  Advance tickets are required.  Tables of ten may be booked by calling Joan Irvine at 920-294-6256.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Much of the next months’ programs are put of “Be Creative @ Your Library,” this year’s summer library program.  The creative fun will kick off with a series of family story times beginning Monday, June 22 at 6:30 and continuing through July 20. Children’s crafts (young at heart are welcome, too) and related activities will be offered on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 to 3:30, June 23 through July 21.   Fridays will feature a mixture of children’s matinees and performances, all starting at 2 p.m.  On July 10, Stacy Schmude, the Balloon Kid will be back to dazzle one and all with her amazing balloon sculpting.  Randy Peterson, a gifted musician from Green Bay, will delight audience members with tunes and tales with his high energy performance Friday, July 17.  Finally, Mr. Billy will wrap up with a concert Tuesday, July 28, starting a 6 p.m.  The evening will end on a sweet note with ice cream sundaes.

Readers of all ages are invited to register for the summer library program, and to record titles or pages read for fun rewards and prizes.  “Be Creative @ Your Library” events are open to all and are free--thanks to funding by the Princeton Library Friends, the Winnefox Library System, the City of Princeton, and other generous donors.

If you like the idea of high fashion at a low cost, mark your calendar for Thursday, July 9, 6 p.m.  Julie Metcalf from Personal Best Spa & Fitness Center will share tips on how to spot the really good stuff at thrift and resale shops.  She will be joined by two other experts and others who will model some of their recent finds and show you how to accessorize and make your bargain finds uniquely yours.  This event will be followed up with a program on how to shop flea markets, garage sales, and other resale sites for home décor.   There will be lots of great ideas just in time for decorating dorm rooms or first apartments, or for anyone on a budget wanting to spiff up a room.  Please stop by, call, or visit the library’s website for date and time.

Watch also for additional information about a program in the works by experts from Green Lake County’s UW-Extension office on how to can and freeze summer’s bounty from farm markets and backyard gardens.  Other routine library programs continue as usual:  Bridge, every Thursday at 10; knitting circle, two Mondays per month from 6 – 7:30; Internet for beginners and computer basics, scheduled at mutual convenience of all involved; two monthly book discussions—one devoted to mysteries, the other, just about anything printed and bound!  You will find more information about these programs and others at the library’s website, the Princeton cable channel, our weekly newspaper columns, or through a quick call or visit to the library.

Summer in Princeton means the Flea Market is open, Saturdays through October 10!   The Princeton Library Friends, along with other local service clubs and organizations, take turns hosting the concession stand for this event.  Please support the Friends by stopping for a cold beverage or a hot-off-the-grill sandwich Saturday, July 18.  The Friends are also recruiting volunteers to work a shift or two at this very important fundraiser.

May 2009

If you love bargains, be sure to stop at the library on Saturday, May 16 between 9 and 3 during the citywide garage sale.  Enjoy browsing through a large selection of books and other materials, as well as other gently used items.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase new library materials.

Saturday, May 23 is Princeton’s 7th Annual Rubber Chicken Fling.  Fun will be the order of the day throughout the city with plenty to do for everyone! The library will extend its normal hours to be open from 9 – 3.  The used book and more sale continues, and we will offer children’s crafts from 1 – 3.

Staff and volunteers shelved a new audiobook rotation this week.  Books on c.d. or cassette are an easy way to keep up with new releases, revisit classics, learn a language or another skill when reading isn’t possible.  They make the miles fly whether you’re driving or jogging—in fact, anytime your hands and eyes are occupied but your ears are available is a great time to take advantage of audiobooks.  Books in this format circulate for three weeks and usually can be renewed if necessary.  Remember to browse through our Playaway selection, as well.  Playaways are the new kid on the audiobook block.  Content and player are combined in a package about the size and weight of a deck of cards making Playaways extremely convenient.

The Library Friends held their semiannual meeting this past weekend to work their summer schedule and fundraising.  The Friends invite you to make a contribution to their annual Bakeless Bake Sale which runs through May.  Instead of baking, just put a value on your time and ingredients and make a contribution to the Friends.  No mess or fuss and no calories!  Look for the Friends at the flea market food stand Saturday, July 18.  The Princeton Garden Club is another organization that provides great support to the library.  They will be holding their annual plant sale this Saturday at the Princeton House parking lot on Highway 73 across from the flea market.  Unsold plants, if any, will be available for purchase at the library the following week when the library is open.

Bilingual Storytime at Ripon Public Library
Cinco de Mayo Celebration!

Ripon, WI - Ripon Public Library is proud to offer bilingual Storytimes presented by Julia Salomon on the 2nd Friday of each month. Bilingual story time is a fun and relaxed time in which books in Spanish and English are read, songs in both languages are learned and children and families alike can have a good time. On Friday, May 8, at 10:30 a.m. Julia will host a Cinco de Mayo holiday and celebration. Festivities will include stories, songs, food and dance.

Why bilingual Storytime?
When children at a young age are exposed to other languages, they develop a long lasting desire to communicate with others and develop a greater appreciation for diversity.  Developing and keeping cultural connections is now more important than ever.  Additionally, research has shown that when children are exposed to or learn a second language there are many measurable benefits. Not only is their ability in English enhanced, but they also perform better on standardized tests. They are more confident, as learning a new language is a uniquely rewarding accomplishment. And, bilingual speakers have greater opportunities for college and professional careers as institutions of higher education are placing high value on knowledge of more than one language.

Registration is not required for this free program. For more information, contact Linda DeCramer at 748-6160 or decramer@riponlibrary.org.

Everyone knows the story of the three little pigs and their varied success with home construction.  If Piggy Number Two would have had access to current straw bale construction information and techniques, his straw home would have kept out the big bad wolf!  Whether you’re seriously exploring alternative construction materials and methods or are just plain curious about straw bale construction, mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 22, 6:30 p.m. when Glen Elliott presents a program on straw bale construction.  Glen and Mary Elliott, along with daughter Clair and various pets, live in a three-story straw bale home they designed and built (with the help of friends).  Learn all about straw bale construction--the pros and cons, square foot costs, insulation values, and more during this event which is free and open to all.

Are you a fan of large print format?  A new rotation was added to the library’s shelves last week.  There are one hundred titles—mysteries, westerns, romances, and general fiction—for you to select from.  If you’ve never tried large print, we invite you to check some out.  It’s a great format for anyone who is reading in less than ideal conditions, such as low light, movement, or tired eyes.

Bilingual Storytimes

Julia Salomon will present Bilingual [English/Spanish] Storytimes on the 2nd Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Dates and topics are: February 13, Happy St. Valentine’s; March 13, Yummy Food; April 10, Spring; and May 8, Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

Bilingual story time is a fun and relaxed time in which books in Spanish and English are read, songs in both languages are learned and children and families alike can have a good time.  Registration is not required.

WHY Bilingual Storytime? When children at a young age are exposed to other languages, they develop a long lasting desire to communicate with others, develop a greater appreciation for diversity, and an interest in maintaining cultural connections. Additionally, research has shown that when children are exposed to or learn a second language their ability in English is enhanced, and they tend to score higher on standardized tests. Bilingual children will have greater opportunities educationally and professionally as knowledge of more than one language is highly valued.

15th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest

This contest, open to children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, is an opportunity for children to create and illustrate their very own book. In doing so, they have the chance to win some cool prizes and maybe even have their book appear on PBS! Ripon Public Library will host a Reading Rainbow Club for those interested in entering this contest. Complete contest information is available at http://mptv.org/mptvkids/reading-index.php

The library will offer 6 Reading Rainbow Club sessions, each designed to help facilitate a specific part of the writing, illustrating and submission process. The club will meet on Saturdays, January 17 through February 21 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Nash Room.  Facilitators, Children’s Librarian Linda DeCramer and Ripon College Intern, Megan Sikowski will help students answer the following questions.

1.       Jan 17- What do I want to write about?

2.       Jan 24 – What materials could I use?

3.       Jan 31 – Does my word count meet the criteria for my grade level?

4.       Feb 7 – How will I bind my book?

5.       Feb 14 – What else do I need to do to finish my book?

6.       Feb 21 – Do I have my entry form completed correctly?

There is no fee for these workshops, although entrants will be responsible for their own postage costs to submit their entry. Parents are welcome to attend with their child as it will be helpful for them to have an understanding of the process and goals of each session. Writing and art supplies will be provided by the library.

Registration and a minimum of 5 participants are required for these workshops.  To register call the library at 748-6160 or email decramer@riponlibrary.org.
